The Morecambe & Lunesdale MP David Morris has welcomed the Marine Environment Minister George Eustice MP to Sunderland Point.
The Minister wanted to see the new sea defences that have been installed at Sunderland Point. For sometime, the local community had been campaigning for the defences, however, they were coming up against a number of hurdles. In November 2010 David Morris took their fight to the very top with a debate in the House of Commons. When the Minister responded on behalf of the Government he promised to cut through red tape saying:
“We have to unblock a blockage within government, at whatever level that is.”
Now the sea defences are installed at Sunderland Point and they held strong during the bad weather towards the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014.
Speaking from Sunderland Point David Morris MP said:
“I was incredibly frustrated that Sunderland Point was flooding, the coast was eroding and the reason for it was that government departments weren’t talking and there was far too much red tape. The Minister made representations on behalf of the residents of Sunderland Point, cut through the red tape and now we have the sea defences.”
“George Eustice was impressed with the defences and enjoyed his day visiting Sunderland Point.”
