David Morris MP has reacted angrily after Lancashire County Council announced today that it will close Skerton Community High School.
The Morecambe & Lunesdale MP has been campaigning with parents to keep the school open.
Speaking to Paul O’Gorman on BBC Radio Lancashire, David said:
“Yet again a Labour County Council comes into power they shut down yet another school, they did this in Hornby, there was nine people that wanted the school to close and hundreds to keep it open. In this case in the region of 10 people wanted to close the school and 3,000 plus who wanted to keep it open.”
“They used two different yardsticks just like they did in Hornby, they wanted to close the school when they moved the kids from Hornby High to Skerton School but there was a caveat in there, that they couldn’t close the school for four years. So fast forward four years, labour come back in again and they re-enact the hashing up of what they wanted to do originally.”
“If they’d left Skerton alone the kids would have increase in numbers and the academic standard would have increased.”
David went on to say that he has had a moratorium placed on the land so it can only be used for educational purposes.
Adding:
“The best thing parents can do is put a free school application together and try and keep Skerton open just like the Brethren have done at Hornby School.”
