Morecambe & Lunesdale MP David Morris welcomed Skills and Enterprise Minister Matthew Hancock MP to the district on Thursday. The Minister officially opened the newly refurbished Hexagon Centre at Lancaster and Morecambe College before meeting some of the apprentices who will use the centre.
Later in the day the Minister visited Heysham Power Station and met with Heysham 2 Station Manager Alan Oulton and some of EDF’s apprentices.
Speaking from Lancaster & Morecambe College David Morris MP said:
“It was a pleasure to accompany Matthew to Lancaster & Morecambe College, David Wood and his team do a great job training our young people. I am sure the Hexagon Centre will be used by many thousands of young people over the years.”
“Apprentices are very important at Heysham 1 and Heysham 2, EDF train their apprentices to a high standard. There’s something like 400 applications for just 14 roles which shows how sought after an apprenticeship at Heysham is.”
“More generally, the number of apprentices have more than doubled here in Morecambe & Lunesdale from the number of apprentices there were in 2009/10 it’s great news to see more young people in work. The Minister was keen to hear the apprentices opinions and I am sure some of their suggestions will be used to influence Government policy.”
