David Morris MP has welcomed the news announced today that the EU Commissioner has signed off the new nuclear build at Hinkley Point. EDF Energy, who also operate the Heysham 1 & 2 power stations in Morecambe and Lunesdale have been given permission by regulators at the European Commission following prior approval by the competition commissioner Vice-President Joaquin Almunia.
Hinckley Point C will create 25,000 new employment opportunities during construction and once built will provide 7% of the UK’s electricity, enough for 5 million homes.
Speaking on the day of the announcement David Morris MP said:
‘This is great news for Britain because it clears the way for even more new nuclear builds in places like Anglesey and Heysham. As a Country we are far too reliant on inefficient technology such as wind farms. Nuclear Energy is safe cheap and brings with it energy security’.
