The Morecambe & Lunesdale MP David Morris has today written to the Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove MP asking for his help to save Skerton Community High School.
In 2010 David Morris MP made a similar plea to save Hornby High School and now young people continue to be taught at Hornby.
In the letter David Morris says:
“Lancashire County Council has recently taken the decision to hold a consultation on the future of Skerton High School. It appears that the Labour cabinet member for Children and schools Matthew Tomlinson has already expressed his opinion that the school does not have a viable future long before the consultation has even begun.”
Adding:
“I would be grateful if I could organise a meeting with you when we are back in Parliament after the summer recess.”
This is not the first time Lancashire County Council has attempted to close Skerton High School, a similar consultation was announced back in 2007 and another one in 2009 when the County Council was ran by a Labour administration.
Mr. Morris also wrote to Lancashire County Council Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Schools Matthew Tomlinson at the beginning of August but has not yet received a reply. In that letter David Morris said:
“A constituent has forwarded to me an e-mail that originated from you. In the e-mail you write when talking of Skerton High School “in my opinion, it is no longer viable as a main stream High School.” Does this mean that you have made up your mind even before the statutory consultation commences?”
Speaking from Skerton David Morris said:
“This smacks of the same situation we had with Hornby High School not so long ago. I am not prepared to allow the Labour Controlled Lancashire County Council to do it again.”
