The Morecambe & Lunesdale MP David Morris has today taken his campaign to save Skerton Community High School to the House of Commons. Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions David Morris MP said:
“In my constituency there is a school called Skerton it is at threat of being closed down by the County Council.”
Adding, “would the Prime Minister assure me that his office would look into the fair play of this particular subject given that the County Council education portfolio holder has said in his opinion the school should close, but the first part of the consultation has only just been completed.”
Responding, the Prime Minister David Cameron MP offered to look at the case, but, went on to say that coalition education policy has given schools greater opportunity to gain their independence.
David Morris has also tabled a Parliamentary motion which says:
“That this House notes that Lancashire County Council (LCC) is consulting on the closure of Skerton Community High School (SCHS); further notes that 52.9 per cent of pupils at the school have special educational needs; believes that this specialist support is not available at other local schools; further believes that SCHS is a centre of excellence that is vital to ensuring the community has a breadth of educational options; and calls on LCC to listen to residents and parents who are expressing these points in their consultation responses.”
Anyone wishing to respond to the consultation should write directly to Lancashire County Council.
