David Morris MP has welcomed new dedicated funding from the Government to fill nearly 1 million potholes across the UK, including £1,241,000 to fill an estimated 23,415 potholes locally.
Local motorists will benefit from the dedicated funding after the Government announced that nearly £50 million of funding will be made available to local councils over the next 12 months.
The funding has been made available to councils as part of the Government’s £250 million Pothole Action Fund included in last month’s budget, which will see over four million potholes fixed by 2020/21, and is part of the Government’s plan to invest in infrastructure to secure a better future for our economy.
David Morris MP commented:
‘This announcement is a great boost to many residents in Morecambe and Lunesdale who are fed up with the terrible state of the roads locally. I am pleased that the Government have taken matters into their own hands and ring-fenced the action fund to only be spent on potholes in Lancashire.
The money which has now been transferred for this financial year will be able to fill in 23,415 potholes across the County and it is now time for everyone in Morecambe and Lunesdale to contact Lancashire County Council about their local potholes to make sure we get our fair portion of the funding and it doesn’t end up being spent in Preston.
This money which has been earmarked for potholes is only part of the £21 million pounds the County Council will receive in 2016/17 as part of the government’s £6.1 billion investment for local road maintenance by 2020/21. Local highway authorities decide how this money is spent, including upgrades to road surfacing, bridges, street lighting and other local road maintenance projects that improve journeys for motorists and cyclists. This means that all road maintenance locally is amply funded by Central Government’
