David Morris MP, the Government’s self-employment ambassador has asked the Chancellor to ensure support is given to self-employed people who are currently waiting for payment by Greek companies in light of the credit control crisis facing the country.
Speaking during the urgent statement yesterday David Morris MP said:
‘Mr Speaker, as Self-employment ambassador to the Government I have had a lot of people texting me during this statement. What they are worried about is late payment from businesses in Greece and more to the point draconian steps from the HMRC. Could the Chancellor re-iterate his steps to help small enterprises to flourish in respect of getting paid quicker’
In response Chancellor George Osborne said:
‘I very much commend my Hon friend for the work he does. Let me reiterate that HMRC is ready to operate the time to pay scheme to help both those who are self-employed and small businesses and indeed larger firms who have problems because they are in some kind of transaction with a Greek company and they have been caught up in the Greek Government’s capital controls and advice is there on the Department for Business website and businesses can get bespoke advice by phoning the helpline.’
