Heysham has already been designated as one of the eight sites in the country for a new nuclear power station, it will not be one if the first which is built but in the next ten years the build will be well underway.
On Thursday in the Annual Energy statement David Morris MP highlighted new nuclear technology being proposed by Candu energy and asked the Secretary of State for Energy to ensure that the Government is doing all it can to facilitate talks at the site with EDF to ensure they are able to build a new reactor in Heysham.
Speaking in the House of Commons chamber David Morris MP said:
'Candu Energy is in talks with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority to commission its new nuclear technology. If the talks are successful, it has indicated that it is interested in building a new nuclear power station at Heysham. Will my right hon. Friend use any means at his disposal to facilitate a new build for fission low-carbon energy at that site and secure jobs in my constituency for generations to come?'
In response the Secretary of State Ed Davey MP said:
'I am grateful to the hon. Gentleman for his information, but he will know that I cannot comment ahead of the negotiations or discussions that Candu is having with various stakeholders in the industry,
Speaking after the debate David Morris MP said:
' Although Ed Davey MP is not able to comment formally on the discussions at this point, I thought the annual energy statement would be a good time to ensure that the new build at Heysham is in the forefront of Ministers minds when thinking about the energy future for this Country'.
